Defining Motherhood Today
This Mother's Day, MS. READ celebrates the spirit of modern motherhood and the women navigating the journey in all its complexity and change.
For a long time, the only versions of motherhood we've been shown have been polished and quietly resilient. But that has never been the whole story. Beneath the surface of calm are moments that go unseen and unspoken. A lived experience that exists but is rarely expressed.
Today, that lens is beginning to widen. Through the voices of modern mothers who are still learning, still choosing, still growing into what feels right for themselves and their children, we are invited to perceive the experience more fully.
As these stories come into the open, motherhood becomes less about expectations. And more about honesty and understanding.
Meet The Women Redefining Motherhood Today
SHIMS HASHIM
No Bad Mothers
With little guidance as a first-time mum, Shims Hashim carried an inner voice that made her feel like she wasn’t doing motherhood right. In the quiet uncertainty of early motherhood, she learned to reframe motherhood truly means: Care, love, and showing up in the way you are able to.
Now, she uses her voice to speak about the struggles of motherhood and breastfeeding and hold space for others walking through the same doubts. She gently reminds us that mothers need not punish themselves or struggle in silence. And it's perfectly normal to learn as you go.
FEERA REDZUAN
Growing Into It
For Feera Redzuan, becoming a Gen Z mother has been a journey shaped by both challenge and scrutiny. In a time when modern motherhood is surrounded by countless voices, advice, and constant comparison, she has had to learn to trust herself amid external doubt.
Through the uncertainties and pressures, Feera has slowly discovered a strength she didn’t always know she had. In the process of learning, trying, and growing, she continues to evolve, becoming more confident with each step forward.
Sofea Mastan
On Maternal Mental Health
For Sofea Mastan, motherhood began with a brush with post-partum depression. Choosing vulnerability over silence, she began opening up about the realities many mothers face. From identity shifts to anxiety, to the unseen pressure of needing to appear composed. Now she’s shifting the conversation around motherhood and encouraging mothers to take their wellbeing as importantly as their duty.
Through Sofea's honesty, she reminds us that motherhood was never meant to be navigated alone. A gentle reminder that mothers deserve care, too .
